It is slower and more rhythmic form of bhangra. Jhumar comes from Jhum - which means swaying. Jhumar is a folk dance performed during the harvest season in Punjab. Jhumar is performed especially during Melas, weddings and other major functions and celebrations. It is a living demonstration of the happiness of men.\n\nThis is performed in a circle. The dancers dance around a single drummer standing in the center. Dancers circle around the drummer, and keep up a soft, sibilant chorus as they dance.It\'s costumes are the same as that of Bhangra. It is danced to the tune of emotional songs. The dance is without acrobatics. The movement of the arms only is considered its main forte. Toes are musically placed in front and backwards and turnings are taken to the right, sometimes the dancers place their one hand below the ribs on the left and gesticulate with the right hand. This dance does not tire out its performers and it is normally danced on moonlight nights in the villages away from the habitation. The dancers of this dance let-off a sound, "dee dee" in tune with the beat of the dance which adds to its grace. This dance has also been integrated into Bhangra.\n\nThere are three main types of jhummar, each of which has a different mood, and is therefore suited to different occasionally, reason of its predominating mood. There is satluj jhumar beas jhummar and chenab jhumar too.\n'} created: Tue, 26 Aug 2014, 09:55 PM UTC

This is closely related to Naqal. This is the synonym in Hindi theatre for the north Indian form known as Nautanki. There are some differences between the comic duos of Naqqals and full-fledged dramatic performances by a troupe. This is better classified as Swang. The former has exclusively satirical content, the latter heroic romance interspersed with comic prologue and interludes. The term Swang appears with theatrical associations in Punjabi theatre as early as the religious writings of Guru Nanak. '} created: Tue, 26 Aug 2014, 09:14 PM UTC

One of the prominent festivals of the Hindu community in Goa. In recent years, the state government has been offering its support for public Shigmo parades, made up of traditional folk and street-dancers and elaborately-built floats depicting scenes from regional mythology and religious scenes.\n\nMeanwhile, Shigmo festivals also continue in diverse rural parts of Goa, spanning over a fortnight, with different days earmarked for celebrations in diverse areas. This festival is celebrated around March each year, is linked to the lunar-based Hindu calendar (hence its date according to the Gregorian or solar calendar varies), and comes not far from the Carnival festival, which is also celebrated before the Catholic season of Lent.\n\nTwo Shigmos\n\nThere are two types of Shigmo festivals, the Dhakto Shigmo (literally, the \'small\' Shigmo) and the Vodlo Shigma (meaning, the big Shigmo). The latter has greater consequence. According to the Gazetteer of India, Union Territory: Goa, Daman and Diu (1979), the Dhakto Shigmo is generally celebrated by "agriculturists, the labour class and rural population while (the) Vodlo Shigmo is celebrated by all the classes coming together". It renders the story of Rama in its particular way. Ranamale does not extend beyond Sattari taluka and some parts of Sanguem taluka Indeed the mass mind does not seem to carry a strong impression of the story of Lord Rama.\n\nApart from songs related to wedding ceremonies, folk songs seems to be full of the story of Krishna, of other tales of the Mahabharata and of Vitthala and Rakhumai. It is said that the episode of Rama\'s killing the demoness Tratika is rendered in some places, the performances are found nowhere but the the temple of Mhalsa at Mardol.\n\nThere is a little dancing; there is however, a special dance in a martial mood for battle scenes. The accompaniment is shamel (a wooden percussion instrument) and zanj (a kind of cymbals); occasionally the ghumat is added. The form is thoroughly influenced by the Yakshagana of Karnataka.\n\nThe Sutradhara enters first; in this form he is called a Bhagavat. Next comes a humorous character called Kodangi; it is traditional for this jester to dance the phugdi. These two characters remain on the stage throughout the performances and the shift properties of the scenes.\n\nThe plot moves forward through their dialogue. The costumes are colourful and picturesque. The dialogues are more verse than prose. Neither form of khel admits women; females role are played by men made up like women. It is held that the dramatic form of tiyatra (from "theatre") on the Konkani stage today evolved from the khel.\n '} created: Mon, 25 Aug 2014, 04:55 AM UTC

Performed on Maghi Purnima - the birth anniversary of their Guru(Saint) Guru Ghasidas, the dance is evolving still to include a variety of steps and patterns. The dancers dance around a jaitkhamb set up for the occasion, to the songs eulogizing their spiritual head. The songs also reflect the Nirvana philosophy, conveying the spirit of renunciation of their Guru and the teachings of saint poets like Kabir, Ramdas, Dadu, etc. Dancers with bent torsos and swinging arms continue to dance till carried away by their devotion.
